Anthony BarrowThe portrait paintings shown in TAG#3 are immediately attractive to the viewing publicat large, proved with the huge interest generated from social media on the Tubesplatforms over the last few weeks in October. These are accomplished works whichhave a unique approach to application of the chosen medium and skillfully applied ontoa flat surface.Anthony’s artistic concern goes beyond the image and explores the representationalusing memory as much as references. The artists subject matter is not restrictedto human figures and includes still life and landscape. Although it is his figures andportraiture that he tends to concentrate his focus on.Anthony has been a professional painter for over 30 years and is a member of theNAPA (National Acrylic Painters Association). He holds a BA (Hons) Fine Art and aCertificate for Education. He is a lecturer for Wigan Council in the adult and communitylearning sector providing classes and demonstrations to art groups and studentsthroughout the region. As a freelance lecturer, he travels around Lancashire andCheshire (UK) and teaches at his own art groups in the Wigan Borough.Anthony’s work was shown in the Arts for Health Exhibition in 2015 at Wrightinton,Wigan and Leigh NHS. Anthony has taken part in UK nation wide exhibitions fromLondon to Leigh in the North West of England. And as you would expect his work iscollected in the UK, Europe, and the USA.https://anthonybarrow.co.uk all images ©Anthony Barrow

Arwyn Quick is no stranger to painters Tubes magazine as we have featured his abstract work in a special feature. Then, as now, his work shows a passion for vibrant colour and the natural world inspired by the remote Derbyshire Peaks in the UK. Tubes were quite taken by Arwyn’s abstractions based on landscape, however in the work shown here is the style that the artists is better known for in his local community. The colour however remains the same as the abstraction paintings seen previously in the earlier issues of painters Tubes. They are strong and powerful using Arwyn’s high colour toned preferred choice of palette - seemingly generating an inner light that emits from the paintings direct to the viewer. painting left: Red House Walk. Lane 22 inches x 12 inches - acrylic on canvas painting below: Shady Lane. 20 inches x 16 inches. acrylic on canvas. This colour work is so strong that the accomplished draftsmanship takes a little while to become aware of. However the surety of the artists line and the composition of the paintings is whattotally wins over the viewer and the colourbecomes the means to enjoy this series of realistic landscapes. The artist subject preference is usually landscape or seascape but also includes still life work. Arwyn was a school teacher and now enjoys life as a full time painter. He has exhibited for the last 16 years in a host of exhibitions which began in 2003 with Elk Design in Chesterfield (UK).

Cherie GristAn exciting abstract expressionist withan inclination to formal geometricabstraction. The artist explodes hercolour onto the canvas. As most abstract expressionist willtell you, ‘feelings and memories’, helpto form the initial beginnings of theArtwork, and Cherie is no exception tothat common artistic methodology ofbeginning a piece. However, what is refreshing is herunique approach to creating thefinished image - At one time explosivewith broad strokes, then with largelumps of colour overlaid and achievedby pouring the paint from the edgeof the canvas, controlling the flow bymoving the canvas in a slow motion, one that seems to be carried out bylistening to the paints desires andwishes where it wants to flow. Here is what she says of her ownpractice.“...My works are acombination of built-upexpressive marks, geometricelements and rhythmicpatterns which togetherform an equilibrium betweenchaos and calm, visuallybalancing the two languages. Each finished piece is aworld that reaches out, dragsyou in and keeps you safefor a time before leaving youwith a feeling of hope andpurpose, stillness and calm.”
What I personally find fascinating is the approach she has to form and colour. Her education background was in photography and fashion. After university she found herself inLondon earning a wage (in fashion photography) to pay her rent, but not actually doing what shewanted to do - that was exactly what she is doing now in Liverpool - and that is painting. The artist moved from London back to her home city and began creating without delay. The cost ofliving and the more favourable rental on studio premises making life as a full time artist possible. It isnot unreasonable to conclude that the contemporary flow of high toned colour lines, evident in fashion, may have influenced her colour palettes, it will be interesting to see how the artist develops herrhythms, colour and style of work. all images ©Cherie Grist http://www.cheriegrist.com

above: ‘Cargo Girl’1000mm x 1000mm Acrylic on Canvas.(available for collectors) Claire McCarthy Claire is now entering an enlightening phase of life as an artist where her heritage is starting to direct her attention to specific art creation. The artist is from a family who originated in Ireland, but her memories, feelings of place have always been absolutely connected to the Mersey, its Docks, the Sea, the Dockers, the Ships and the people of Liverpool. As the world changes and in particular the UK , which continues on its course of regeneration of the industrial North, much of the local history, character and what was once its financial strength is not only changing but disappearing. Many will say this is for the better for the environment and the quality of life for the people, and to some extent that is true. However, Claire believes, as do many visual artists in the North of England, that it is important to document and record of the last vestiges of what made the City one of the most important ports of entry in Europe. By using emotional and visual intelligence a few Artists are embarking on this mission to capture that heritage for future generations. Claire is a leading artist in this regard and is working towards an exhibition project with paintings of the ports and the people complimented with video and a strong narrative.

Claire is a qualified educator, however her art has now become the prime focus of her activity.Sensitive, yet a strong character, the artist goes about her work and allows the her natural feelings dictate how she produces the images. She employs whichever medium she feels is correct to capture the transient ebb and flow of the water and the powerful shapes of both large and small ships to float upon it. Colour, reflections, and atmosphere all play an equal importance in Claire’s work. https://www.clairemccarthy.co.uk images©ClaireMcCarthyabove: River and Waterfront. 1000mm x 1000mmabove: Mersey Waves - 200mm x 200mm
Claudia AraceliClaudia is what many people call a ‘plein-air’ painter - That is she works direct from natureand from what is in front of her. TUBES covered plein air in the main magazine (issue #13)and so it is with absolute confidence that I can say that I do not agree with Claudia beinglabelled in any way - except - as a gifted painter. The work shown here in TAG#3 demonstrates Claudia’s ability to capture light and shadewith added depth, her compositions are quite delightful. The movement she gains in oneor two of the paintings shown are strong which are placed on the surface with an assuredhand of an artist that really looks at her subject and transposes her version of it.A version that the viewer can relate to and gain pleasure from.
title: Where Nature Dwells
title: Light and Shadows
title: summer Claudia’s sensitivity to colour is also apparent and can be witnessed in the way she paints nature. Over the last years, Claudia has been recovering from an illness that had previously prevented her from working. However, today her Art has given her the ability to enjoy her abundant creativity once again, which is also good for the viewer of her Art who can appreciate her excellent accomplished work. Claudia was one of two artists selected to represent the United Kingdom in the Worldwide International Watercolour Societies 2017 exhibition in India. She was also one of the artists chosen by the International Watercolour Society England to represent England by exhibiting her paintings at The World Watercolour Society Exhibition mounted in Fabriano, Italy, May 2018 and chosen again in 2019. Tubes look forward to viewing more of her work in the future. https://www.claudiaaraceli.com all images: ©Claudia Aracelititle: coast.
David BezNo stranger to Tubes, David’s work draws inspiration from the urban, industrial andpastoral landscapes in and around his home. In the works shown in TAG# - Tubes haveselected the artists ‘Deconstruction’ series of work - These ‘fantasy’ paintings demonstrateDavid’s fabulous imagination and pure talent - The artist utilises a Faux Vitrial process, hand embellishing with silicates and resins. This process adds a depth and richness to thepaintings, giving a unique and exclusive finish to the work.Tubes editor interviewed David for the main magazine, it was during the interview where theartist intimated that his unique ‘imagination’ stems from the fact that David was encouragedto paint from an early age by his Mother, (who still retained what he painted from the ageof four, which shows a natural ability to use line and colour. Today, David is now a full timeworking artist, illustrator and glass designer who finds working and experimenting in thesecontrasting areas both challenging and exciting. images ©David Bez. https://www.facebook.com/davidbezartist.

above painting: ‘Last Light’ 300mm x 300mm Jocelyn Roberts Jocelyn is what I would term an environmental painter with a unique talent for capturing the faces of nature. Her word is both strong when nature demonstrates her power - and so very gentle on those special days that we have all experienced under the open and blue skies of a summers day. The artist is a Welsh painter who lives and works on the North Wales coastline (old Conwy). The work shown here in TAG#3 generously gives the viewer an insight into the artists passion for the natural world. Jocelyn, as you may expect, sketches and paints direct from life, many of her work can be seen as ‘plein-air’ although regular readers of TUBES magazine already know the curator of TAG does not favour ‘labels.’
above painting: ‘Fire Sky’ 300mm x 300mm It is quite a common practice to paint direct outside and then transcribe the sensation to a larger work in the Studio. Both methods are used by Jocelyn. The work which struck the writer was the ‘blue-grey’ painting with the slice of vivid orange red streaking across the sky at 45 degrees - This is a reminder of how J.M.W- Turner used ‘colour shock’ to give the viewer an unforgettable experience of the power of Art and nature combined.

Autumn and Rising Cloud - Mellbreak. 600mm x 600mm acrylic on board Malcolm Dobbins The unique abstract work of the artist is easily recognisable, and has been for quite some time. Malcolm has been painting for over four decades. His medium is acrylic and his style has been developed from twentieth centuries masters such as Hans Hoffman through to Franz Kline. Although his own abstractions the feel is more akin to Abstract-Realism than it is to pure abstraction as Hoffman or Kline work are. It is not uncommon to see Malcolm’s style emulated these days, as other artists are attracted by the beauty of the texture of surface that Malcolm achieves Yet, none can match his colour sense - or the way in which he carefully balances the colour tones within a specific composition, an attention to detail which is all his own.

‘a good year’- 420mm x 590mm Oil on canvas board Martin Davis “The drive to create work is my emotional response to colour, my love of form and to the effects on both of light & atmosphere.” So says the artist about his art ...
‘Marbles’ 350mm x 255mm oil on boardDidactic and an ex fire-fighter the artist was born and raised in the coalfields ofDerbyshire, Martin Davis is an Artist who is reluctant to call himself by that ‘illustrious’title. The reader may well disagree with him after viewing his work in TAG #3.The examples Tubes have shown here are in the main still life - a genré of art thatgoes as far back as Nathaniel Bacon, who painted with pride the produce of hisgarden (Cook maid with Still Life - Vegetables and Fruit- 1620) Nathaniel was probablydidactic (self taught) too, so Martin is in very good company.Martin’s work is blatantly realistic and finely painted. There is something simplistic inthe composition, witty with a touch of nostalgia (ref to the Glass Marbles paintings,(see above painting). The only critic that could be made, is that it would be great to seeMartin ‘up-size’ his still life work.
‘Green Bowl with Bust ‘ 200mm x 250mm Oil on canvas board‘Coffee Break’ 305mm x 405mm Oil on canvas board
“Rememberance” 255mm x 310mm oil on board
The ‘Remembrance’ painting (left) seems to be a bit of a ‘break- through’ for the artist. It’s looser and with its unfinished appearance (with area of the canvas or linen clearly left un-worked) gives the work a look of ‘spontaneous painting’ and not a meticulous time consuming realist photographic piece. Many of the photo-real artworks seen today have a feeling of being ‘sanitized,’ (sic: without feelings or emotion). The ‘Remembrance’ painting by Martin does have a sense of emotion, space and time. This work also holds the promise of future paintings with a life and an energy that is imbued with empathy - To quote from a special feature article from Tubes magazine... “...there can be still life, in Still Life Paintings.” all images: ©Martin Davis https://martindavisartist.co.uk/glass vase with fruit - 300mmx 400mmoil on canvas board
Ron Etherington.A proud member of the ‘Saddleworth’(established in 1950) group of painters.Ron has been encouraged and guidedby the well known North West ArtistJohn McCombs N.D.D, R.O.I, F.R.S.A,M.A.F.ARon switched from painting in acrylicsto oils. This gave Ron’s work a newway to gain depth and more subtlechanges in tonal values he couldexplore and develop. The paintings ‘Coverham Church’and ‘River Wharfe’ are obviouslyaccomplished works with the painting‘Slaithwaite Canal Path’ beingthe outstanding landscape (neo-impressionism style) of the workshown here in TAG #3.The artist found his subject matter inthe nature that surrounds him in theNorth of England. His work projects acalm tenderness that is very easy onthe eye and provides opportunity forthe viewer for quiet contemplation.note:John McCombs has guidedand given art classes to many artistspracticing today including, Ann Parkin,David Edwards, Steve Tringer, IanNorris and Margaret Hinchliffe all ofwhom took John’s class with RonEhtherington in 2010. all images ©Ron Etheringtonwww.saddleworthartists.co.uk
